A gable patio has a pitched roof that rises to a central ridge, with a triangular "gable end" at the front. It gives the most height and visual presence of the common patio styles and suits large entertaining areas, pool surrounds and freestanding pavilions.
Benefits
- High, open feel — great over large areas and outdoor kitchens.
- Hot air rises into the peak and away from people.
- Gable infill options (open, battened, screened or clear) change the look and light.
- Works attached to the house or freestanding.
Gable vs flyover vs skillion
Gables use more steel and more complex framing than a flat skillion, so they cost more per m². One Brisbane guide shows gable/pitched Colorbond patios at about $350–$850 per m² installed, versus $250–$600 per m² for flat/skillion. A flyover can be a middle ground: height without a full gable. Insulated panels can be used on gable roofs too, though spans for gable applications are typically more conservative in manufacturers' tables.
Planning considerations
Gables are taller, which matters for boundary clearances and any height limits that apply. Under the QDC, the side/rear clearance depends on the height of each part of the structure, so a tall gable close to a boundary may need a different design or a siting variation. See patio setbacks in QLD.
How it works with us

Frequently asked questions
Can a gable patio be insulated?
Yes. Insulated panels can form the roof of a gable patio. Manufacturer span tables treat gable applications more conservatively, so the builder sizes beams and panels accordingly.
Are gable patios more expensive?
Generally yes, because of extra framing and labour. Published Brisbane ranges place gable roofs above flat/skillion roofs per m².
