Patios in Albany Creek & Eatons Hill

Albany Creek grew fast in the 1970s and Eatons Hill from the 1990s, and both are settled suburbs now: Eatons Hill was 99% separate houses at the 2021 Census. Patio work is almost all upgrades to established homes, often on blocks that fall away, where posts, piers and a deck matter more than the roof.

Albany Creek's farmland began to be subdivided in 1960, and the suburb grew fast through the 1970s: its population rose from 1,523 in 1971 to 4,552 by 1976. Eatons Hill was named in 1972. Housing started near the hill west of Cash's Crossing and spread west in the late 1990s. These are settled suburbs, with little growth (Eatons Hill even dipped slightly in 2024–25). The patio work here is almost all upgrading established homes, not new builds.

Established homes, sloping blocks

Expect 1970s–90s brick homes, many on blocks that fall away from the street or towards the South Pine River. On a sloping block a patio off the back of the house can sit well above the ground. That calls for taller posts, engineered footings and sometimes a deck underneath. Consider a gable roof for height and views, or a flyover where the existing eave is low.

Do I need approval for a patio in Albany Creek?

Council mapping flags land steeper than 15% as a landslide hazard area. There, earthworks over 50 m³ and cut, fill or retaining over 600 mm trigger a development application. Use piers rather than benching the slope. Lots near the South Pine River or local creeks may also have flood mapping or riparian setbacks, from 20 m to 50 m depending on waterway class. My Property Look Up shows all of these.

What does a patio cost in Albany Creek?

Slope is the big cost driver here. A patio that sits well above the ground needs taller posts, engineered pier footings and often a deck, which can cost as much as the roof. Designing the deck and roof together usually saves money because they can share footings.

Published Brisbane-area ranges put an insulated-panel patio roof at about $350–$750 per m² installed. Cost guide · Estimate yours →

Albany Creek patio questions

Can a patio go on a steep Albany Creek block?

Yes, usually on piers with engineered posts and footings rather than a slab. If the site is in Council's landslide hazard area (slope over 15%), keep earthworks and retaining small. Larger cut and fill needs a development application.

Should I extend my deck and roof it at the same time?

It's often cheaper to design them together, because the patio posts can come down through the deck to shared footings. A roofed deck is not exempt from approval, so it goes to a certifier as one job.
