A flat or skillion patio has a single, gently sloping roof plane. "Flat" patios aren't truly flat — they need a minimum fall so rain runs off (manufacturers specify minimum pitches, e.g. 1° for Cooldek Classic and 2° for SolarSpan). It's the simplest, quickest and usually most affordable patio design.
Attached or freestanding
Attached skillions fix to the fascia, a wall bracket or the house frame and fall away from the house. Freestanding skillions stand on their own posts — useful over a pool, a separate deck, or where the house can't take the load.
Insulated or single-skin?
Skillions are the most common place to use insulated panels because the panel underside becomes the ceiling. If budget is tight, a single-skin Colorbond skillion is the entry point; one Brisbane guide shows $250–$600 per m² for flat/skillion Colorbond and $350–$750 per m² for insulated. See insulated vs Colorbond.
When a skillion isn't ideal
On a low-set home, attaching under the existing gutter can leave very little head height at the house end. That's where a flyover is often recommended instead.

Frequently asked questions
What is the minimum pitch for a flat patio roof?
It depends on the product. Stratco specifies 1° for Cooldek Classic and 3° for Cooldek CGI; Bondor specifies a 2° minimum for SolarSpan. Too little fall can cause ponding.
Is a skillion patio cheaper than a gable?
Usually. One Brisbane guide lists flat/skillion Colorbond patios at about $250–$600 per m² and gable roofs at about $350–$850 per m². Insulated panels cost more than single-skin steel in either style.
