Patios in Margate, Woody Point & Clontarf

Margate, Woody Point and Clontarf line the peninsula's Bramble Bay side, from Woody Point's jetty to the bridges at Clontarf. Most homes are established, so patio work is re-roofs, flyovers and patio-carport combinations. Low esplanade and inlet-side lots need a storm-tide check before you design.

Woody Point's first jetty was finished in 1882, and today's 240 m jetty is a fishing and walking spot. Margate grew up around the peninsula's ferry jetties, then grew faster once the Hornibrook Highway opened in 1935; the heritage-listed Woody Point Memorial Hall sits on Hornibrook Esplanade. Woody Point is notably unit-heavy: only 54% of occupied dwellings were separate houses at the 2021 Census, against 72% in Margate and 79% in Clontarf.

What patio suits a Margate home?

Briefs range from re-roofing an old patio with insulated panels to a raised flyover that catches the bay breeze without blocking the view. Unit owners in Woody Point need body corporate approval first; see the Redcliffe hub.

Do I need approval for a patio in Margate?

Low esplanade-side lots can be within the Coastal hazard overlay; in High or Medium storm-tide areas Council requires a development application for class 10a structures. Where coastal Scenic amenity mapping applies, it mainly controls fences and walls facing the water and protects mature pines, palms, figs and cotton trees, so avoid designs that need one removed. All three suburbs are in the Redcliffe Kippa-Ring local plan.

Bramble Bay exposure

Bramble Bay is sheltered water, but esplanade homes are only metres from the high-water mark, which rules out unpainted ZINCALUME® or metallic finishes there. Salt-air steel choices and storm-tide steps for the whole peninsula are on our Redcliffe Peninsula hub.

Clontarf: the bridge end

Clontarf is the peninsula's south-western gateway. The Hornibrook Highway bridge landed here from Brighton in 1935; it closed to traffic in 1979, and today the Houghton Highway and Ted Smout Memorial Bridge (2010) cross to Brisbane. The suburb was named in 1882 but grew mainly after 1935. It is bordered by Hays Inlet and Bramble Bay and parts are low-lying, so check storm-tide and flood mapping first. Combined patio and carport jobs are common; a carport forward of the house has its own height (3.3 m, mean 2.7 m) and setback limits.

What does a patio cost in Margate?

Re-roofing an established home is usually cheaper than a full rebuild if the frame is sound. A combined patio and carport costs more in total but less than two separate jobs. On storm-tide-mapped esplanade lots, a Council development application adds fees and time.

Published Brisbane-area ranges put an insulated-panel patio roof at about $350–$750 per m² installed. Cost guide · Estimate yours →

Margate patio questions

Do mature trees on my block affect the patio?

They can. Coastal scenic amenity provisions aim to retain existing pines, palms, figs and cotton trees, and significant trees listed in the planning scheme have a 20 m protection zone. Design around them where you can.

How do I check storm-tide risk for my Clontarf home?

Search your address in Council's My Property Look Up and turn on the Coastal hazard overlay layer, or download a Flood Check report. Your certifier needs this to know whether a Council application is required.
