Bribie Island has been joined to the mainland since the Bribie Island Bridge opened on 19 October 1963, crossing Pumicestone Passage from Sandstone Point to Bellara and Bongaree. The island's suburbs face two very different kinds of water. Bongaree, Bellara and Banksia Beach look west over the sheltered Passage, with canal estates around Banksia Beach. Woorim, on the south-eastern corner, faces the Coral Sea surf beach to the east and Moreton Bay to the south.
Island homes
Common jobs are re-roofing old patios with insulated panels for summer heat, and canal-side entertaining areas. Everything has to come over the bridge, so ask whether the quote includes travel and delivery.
Do I need approval for a patio on Bribie Island?
Council's outbuildings sheet (covering class 10a structures) sets a 4.5 m canal setback for canal-front lots. Lots in the Coastal hazard overlay, whether in the erosion-prone area along the ocean beach or the High/Medium storm-tide areas on the low-lying Passage side, need a Council development application, not just a certifier's permit. Woorim's beach has a long-term shoreline recession trend, so beachfront lots there deserve particular care. Check My Property Look Up first.

Woorim surf vs Passage-side salt
This is where BlueScope's distinction between surf and calm water matters most. A Woorim home within a couple of hundred metres of the surf beach is in a far harsher environment than a Bongaree home on the Passage: standard COLORBOND® is rated only beyond 200 m from breaking surf, COLORBOND® Ultra from 100 m, and stainless SUPERDURA® closer. On surf-facing lots, ask whether the panel's top skin and flashings come in Ultra or stainless, and what warranty applies at your distance. Full table in our coastal materials guide.
What does a patio cost on Bribie Island?
Two things are specific to the island: builders' travel over the bridge, and, at Woorim, upgraded steel and fasteners near the surf. Canal patios are often large because they open to the water. Ask for travel and delivery to be shown in the quote.
Published Brisbane-area ranges put an insulated-panel patio roof at about $350–$750 per m² installed. Cost guide · Estimate yours →
Bribie Island patio questions
Does a patio at Woorim need different materials from one at Bongaree?
Often, yes. Woorim faces surf; Bongaree faces the sheltered Passage. BlueScope rates standard COLORBOND® (Classic/Matt) for any distance from calm water but only beyond 200 m from breaking surf.
Do builders from the mainland service Bribie?
Many do, but travel time can show up in the price. When you request quotes, say which island suburb you are in so we only pass it to builders who service Bribie.
